We note that commodity prices have surged over the past year on the back of trillions of dollarsreleased in the form of stimulus packages to help the global economy recover from the pandemic, boosting demand forraw materials. More specifically, the recent acceleration in potash pricesis supported, at least partly, by strong demand from farmers followingmulti-year high crop prices, particularly in the USA, Brazil and SE Asia. To a lesser extent, the recent US, UK and EU sanctions against Belarus,

As midsummer’s day looms (where has this year gone?), there is greater optimism, in general, than may have been anticipated a few months ago. A post-pandemic, ‘vaccine-driven’ recovery demonstrated by increased consumer spending as lockdown measures are lifted has been one of the catalysts. The FTSE 100 has been range-bound in the last month 6,900-7,100. We have seen a combination of broadly positive company results across a range of sectors, further examples of M&A activity and a sequence of ne

The UK market showed a continued recovery in the first quarter albeit the indices are still well short of their all-time peaks, unlike many of their international peers. The FTSE 100 has risen by 1,186 points (21.4%) since the end of October and the FTSE 250 by 4,304 points (25.0%). The comparable performance since the start of the year is less spectacular- the FTSE 100 has risen by 253 points (3.9%) and the FTSE 250 has risen by 1,070 points (5.0%). The factors behind the sustained rally are fa

In the last fortnight, we have surrendered some of the notable progress made over the last three months. That said, the optimism displayed by markets, driven by progress with vaccines and their rollout, persists. The recent direction of markets has been set by volatility in US markets, driven by specific retail market developments. Domestically, we have seen a broadly upbeat procession of results and trading updates/outlooks have, generally, been at least in line. The share price reactions have

We highlighted last month the (first) Santa Rally arrived early (unlike some other festive gifts). The second Claus(e) relief rally was prompted by the agreement between the European Commission and the UK on its future cooperation with the EU. Markets also reacted positively to the $900bn stimulus package agreed in the US. While the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 indices rose by 1.6% and 1.7% respectively on the first trading day after the holiday and the FTSE 100 has recovered 28% from its low point in

Kore Potash is a large fertiliser play that has been developing the Sintoukola potash basin in the Republic of the Congo (RoC) since 2010. Kore has a district scale development with approx 6 billion tonnes of potash, just 15km from the coast and US$150m has been spent on it thus far. Big projects need big budgets. The flagship 2.2Mtpa Kola project came through the DFS with flying colours but needs US$2.1bn of capex, not easy for a small cap player with a new project in such a jurisdiction to rai

Phoenix copper today announces an update on its deep drilling program below the proposed Empire oxide open pit resource and into the deeper sulphide zone. Phoenix is roughly 1/4 the way through a 4,500m drilling programme and has once again shown that high-grade zones of copper, zinc and lead sulphide mineralisation exist, nearly always associated with gold and/or silver and often with elevated concentrations of tungsten and molybdenum.

Wentworth Resources has announced a MOU with Vitol for the development of new community-focussed carbon credit programmes in Tanzania to partially offset the impact of its emissions footprint at Mnazi Bay. While Wentworth has one of the lowest Scope 1 and Scope 2 intensities of any UK-Listed E&P company (0.42kg/CO2 boe in 2020), it recognises that it must take continuous action to minimise its impacts for their stakeholders. Wentworth has committed to offsetting all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions

While the outcomes of COP26 are mixed, we think that the watering down of ambition on coal power is positive for negative emission technologies and the moves to phase-out fossil fuel subsidies potentially makes green hydrogen more competitive. Broader support for clean energy and efficiency helps and annual monitoring is likely to ensure that support develops to the benefit of the sector. Policy remains an essential part of the clean energy mix especially in its ability to create or mitigate inv

Against the backdrop of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) we take a closer look at the rapidly developing technology and industries surrounding the evolution of the so-called hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is an energy vector or fuel that is capable of storing, transforming and transporting energy with zero emissions at the point of use. It can also be made by renewable energy sources. It is also the most abundant element in the universe accounting for some 75% of all matt
