With Chevron dropping out of the $38bn battle for Anadarko last week, the way is now open for Occidental Petroleum (despite several shareholders voicing their discontent). As part of the deal that allowed Occidental to improve its bid, Total should acquire Anadarko’s African assets for $8.8bn and is further proof of Total’s opportunistic approach after the acquisitions of Maersk Oil and Engie LNG in 2017 and 2018.
