The QCA, which campaigns for smaller quoted companies, says that the latest MIFID II policy statement by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will enable smaller companies to continue to commission research that can be distributed to fund managers for free. This will include when a smaller company is raising additional cash in order to finance growth. There were worries that the EU’s MIFID II directive could have made it more difficult to make small company research available to investors.

IQE and Next Fifteen Communications are entering the FTSE AIM UK 50 index later this month, while Primary Health Properties could be the next former AIM company to join the FTSE 250 because it is included on the reserve list for that index. Semiconductor wafers supplier IQE and PR group Next Fifteen, both of which have benefited from the decline in sterling because of their international operations, are replacing Gemfields and Arbuthnot Banking. The IQE share price has trebled since its low last July. The business is highly cyclical and in the past has been dependent on demand from the mobile sector. More recently, though, photonics has been a growing contributor. IQE is highly cash generative. Next Fifteen is growing on the back of investment in digital marketing services. Primary Health Properties joined AIM in March 1996 when it was valued at £16m, having raised a similar amount. The healthcare properties investor did not stay on AIM for long, moving to the Main Market in November 1998. It is currently valued at £636m and offers a yield of nearly 5%. One former AIM company appears set to leave the FTSE 250 in the coming months. That is if Tesco’s £3.7bn cash and shares merger with Booker is successful. The food wholesaler moved to the Main Market on 1 July 2009 when it was valued at £525m at a share price of 33p.

Underlying operating profit is expected to be at least £3.0m, slightly higher than our forecast. Cash generation remains strong, higher than expected, with cash of £5.78m at June 2015. Open Orphan has announced it is at an advanced stage in planning to spin off non-core clinical development assets through an AIM market listing. The Board believes that this collection of assets and portfolio of IP is better developed in the long term by being separated from the core Open Orphan services businesses, allowing more appropriate focus and funding. In our view, the Group's recent commentary has indicated the intention to spin-off a number of assets and this news confirms progress here although we note recent share price performance likely already reflects some of this positive development.

The UK market showed a continued recovery in the first quarter albeit the indices are still well short of their all-time peaks, unlike many of their international peers. The FTSE 100 has risen by 1,186 points (21.4%) since the end of October and the FTSE 250 by 4,304 points (25.0%). The comparable performance since the start of the year is less spectacular- the FTSE 100 has risen by 253 points (3.9%) and the FTSE 250 has risen by 1,070 points (5.0%). The factors behind the sustained rally are familiar. The belief that the roll-out of the vaccine and some relaxation of lockdown limitations will lead to a significant economic recovery, compared to the collapse seen in the first half of 2020, due to lockdowns. Indeed, the recent economic picture is becoming more optimistic than previous expectations. According to the ONS, the economy grew a little more than initially estimated in Q4 last year. This means GDP for 2020 as a whole contracted by 9.8%, revised up marginally but still the worst contraction on record. Markets, in general, have focused upon the potential scope and extent of the recovery. The sectors and stocks that have outperformed have been seen as ‘recovery’ plays with a rotation from stocks seen as ‘lockdown’ winners into those set to benefit from the ‘unlocking of society’ and/or exposed to the consumer. We expect 2021 will continue to be a “stock-picker’s” market. The sharp increase in the household savings ratio in Q4 highlights the scope for a recovery driven by expenditure. As further lockdown limitations are lifted, evidence of this growth will help to underpin the more optimistic outlook for Q2 and beyond.

The Budget offered a clear picture of the state of the economy. Put simply, the economy will be 3% smaller in three years’ time than it would have been without the impact of the pandemic. However, it is forecast to return to pre-pandemic levels by mid-2022, six months earlier than previously thought. The OBR forecasts that the UK economy will grow by 4.1% in 2021, (lower than the 5.5% outlined in November 2020). It has set its GDP forecasts in 2022, 2023 and 2024 at 7.3%, 1.7% and 1.6%. Positively, we have a continuation of substantial support for various parts of the economy – totalling £350bn. The market may focus on two elements. Under the so-called “super-deduction scheme, businesses which invest in the next two years will be able to claim 130% of the cost against their tax bill. This is significant but also significant is the proposed increase in corporation tax on profits from 19% to 25% in 2023. This has material consequences. Looking that far ahead is not straightforward. The increased tax charge will inevitably impact ratings. This may not be a consideration currently but may become one as more FY2023 estimates are introduced. Closer to home, we have continued to see most results/updates in line with expectations. An increasing number of companies have restored dividends. M&A across a broad range of sectors also looks set to continue.

Last week's announcement from VDTK highlighted noteworthy achievements on the product front, notably moving its “first generation” lightweight solar panels from 260 Watts per panel to 300 Watts. In line with previous announcements, and our research published in February, this ramp up is now moving up to 350 Watts per panel, marking a 35% increase in per panel efficiency from the original baseline 260W. The second generation product will have a complete new certification process, a given since the new gen products represent more than 10% more capacity than the earlier product, but also a positive move from the point of view of the marketing process, opening up increasing numbers of market opportunities to the company and allowing it to benefit from both on-grid and off-grid opportunities.

After reporting results slightly ahead of our forecasts across all its business divisions, Science Group looks set to maintain its earnings momentum into 2021. In R&D consulting the Medical sector was the main driver of growth in 2020, and the sector continues to be strong into the current year. Frontier is also seeing healthy demand, though constrained by component tightness. We, therefore, raise our sales and margin forecasts for the group. We continue to expect the group to generate significant shareholder value, both through steady organic growth as well as M&A transactions. We also expect it to re-rate on the back of strong execution, both organically and on its M&A strategy. We raise our target price from 360p to 410p.
