N+1 Singer - Small-cap quantitative research - Momentum screen refresh + 9 focus stocks
We have refreshed our momentum screen for a second time, the previous refresh having been in January. As before, the screen selects the 25 stocks exhibiting the strongest momentum, according to our measurement method. From these we selected 9 to focus on. Since the last refresh the screen has significantly outperformed both the main small-cap and micro-cap indices against a background of strong and stable momentum generally. We also present here a wider study of accelerating and decelerating momentum stocks, because of interesting behaviour noticed previously. The interim conclusion is that these two characteristics are a significant differentiator of performance. We show on pages 7 and 8 the current most accelerative and decelerative stocks.

There is volatility ahead
3i is in fine fettle with a performing portfolio, strong prospects and a heady valuation (c38% premium to 31 March NAV). Ex-Action, the group’s portfolio is performing (c13% EBITDA growth) and looks capable of delivering the required 2x money (gross) with a number of investees (four, excluding Action) delivering 30%plus EBITDA growth. The core uncertainty is whether 3i is worth a 37% premium.

Franchise strength and development
The drag on revenues from scarce market-wide primary equity issuance was substantially mitigated by progress in most other areas, reflecting the breadth and strength of the franchise that has been built. Numis is positive on H2 revenues and expects a pick-up in IPO activity. Less positively, cost pressure is greater than we had expected and prospectively from the implementation of MiFID II. Strategically, Numis looks well placed to navigate industry change, has successfully completed a major succession in leadership, and continues to offer absolute and relative value.

Market dominance brings the cash
Driven by the market-leading Jackpotjoy division, Q1 gaming revenues rose 11% to £71.4m with an EBITDA margin of 40.9% and underlying cash conversion of c 100%. Q2 trading has started well across all divisions. Adjusted net debt/EBITDA of c 4.0x remains high, but Jackpotjoy plc (JPJ) is comfortably positioned to pay a major c £95m earnout in June and we expect significant deleverage from 2018. The market is pricing in a high degree of execution risk, with 2017 trading multiples of 6.9x EV/EBITDA and 6.1x P/E. Despite regulatory headwinds, we forecast continued strong underlying growth and we would expect a re-rating as debt repayments begin to drive value to equity.

UK REIT generates net income surplus in FY16
Standard Life Investments Property Income Trust (SLI) aims to generate both income and capital growth from investing directly in UK commercial property. Its emphasis continues to be on generating above-average income for shareholders and it currently yields 5.4%. In FY16, the dividend was 117% covered by earnings and the manager, Jason Baggaley, is reasonably sanguine about future dividend prospects. Relative performance is measured against the quarterly version of the IPD Monthly Index Funds, which is representative of UK direct property funds. SLI has outperformed this benchmark, in NAV total return terms, over one, three and five years.

Results to the left of them, results to the right of them
We continue to see outperformance by the junior market indices. In our view, this is largely due to smaller companies delivering robust trading in updates, although M&A activity is also playing a part. Indeed, the majority of corporate results continue to be in line with expectations. The UK election rumbles on in the background and near term the focus will likely remain on the domestic political landscape. In Share News & Views we have covered Braemar Shipping*, Downing Strategic Micro-Cap Investment Trust*, Invesco Growth Trust* and Warpaint London*.

N+1 Singer - Sigma Capital Group - Successful launch of the UK’s maiden PRS REIT, raising £250m
Sigma Capital has successfully raised £250m equity for the UK’s first dedicated private-rented sector (“PRS”) REIT. Attractive target returns – including a 6% stabilised income yield – has secured funds from institutional investors and the Homes and Communities Agency (£25m). The REIT will materially enhance income visibility for Sigma and increase recurring income. This is transformational. We are currently finalising revised forecasts (withdrawn 4th May). We reiterate that there will be an impact to current year earnings from measures taken in order to ensure the successful launch of the REIT. We see value creation through the deployment of REIT capital, and potentially subsequent fundraising activity.
