Supermarket chain currently employs 1,500 staff at 206 branches of Tesco Opticians
Companies: Tesco PLC
The UK's largest retailer Tesco has announced that it intends to sell all 206 branches of its optician business to Vision Express for an undisclosed figure, as it continues to reduce operations and focus on its core activities in the UK.
The FTSE 100 supermarket giant currently employs 1,500 staff at 206 branches of Tesco Opticians, all of which are reportedly going to transfer to Vision Express following a consultation period.
Tesco UK boss Matt Davies said the move would allow Tesco to simplify further and strengthen its UK business, ensuring customers can get high-quality eye care services from Vision Express in Tesco's larger stores.
Tesco has been selling several brands in the past two years, including also Giraffe, Dobbies Garden Centres, and Euphorium Bakers. Similar reductions have been made by other members of the big four supermarkets.
Shares in Tesco jumped 1% early on Wednesday. The disposal will be subject to regulatory approval by the Competition and Markets Authority.
