The Chinese commerce ministry has introduced new graphite export permits and curbs in what is seen as being a retaliation for recent US government restrictions on semiconductor sales to China and the launch of an EU investigation into Chinese EV subsidies. The export of synthetic graphite and related products with high purity, high strength and high density will be banned from export as will natural flake graphite and related products. Whilst this could see some price increases across graphite grades in the shorter term, we see this as being more positive for Talga in the long term as the focus on securing non-Chinese graphite becomes more pressing with Sino-Western trade relations showing no signs of improvement.
