The UK market showed a continued recovery in the first quarter albeit the indices are still well short of their all-time peaks, unlike many of their international peers. The FTSE 100 has risen by 1,186 points (21.4%) since the end of October and the FTSE 250 by 4,304 points (25.0%). The comparable performance since the start of the year is less spectacular- the FTSE 100 has risen by 253 points (3.9%) and the FTSE 250 has risen by 1,070 points (5.0%). The factors behind the sustained rally are familiar. The belief that the roll-out of the vaccine and some relaxation of lockdown limitations will lead to a significant economic recovery, compared to the collapse seen in the first half of 2020, due to lockdowns. Indeed, the recent economic picture is becoming more optimistic than previous expectations. According to the ONS, the economy grew a little more than initially estimated in Q4 last year. This means GDP for 2020 as a whole contracted by 9.8%, revised up marginally but still the worst contraction on record. Markets, in general, have focused upon the potential scope and extent of the recovery. The sectors and stocks that have outperformed have been seen as ‘recovery’ plays with a rotation from stocks seen as ‘lockdown’ winners into those set to benefit from the ‘unlocking of society’ and/or exposed to the consumer. We expect 2021 will continue to be a “stock-picker’s” market. The sharp increase in the household savings ratio in Q4 highlights the scope for a recovery driven by expenditure. As further lockdown limitations are lifted, evidence of this growth will help to underpin the more optimistic outlook for Q2 and beyond.

Mission Group’s FY20A results detailed a strong performance and impressive underlying progress despite a very challenging backdrop, reinforcing our conviction that it is well placed to bounce back this year and deliver attractive medium-term growth. Based on our updated estimates, the group’s stock is trading on FY22F PE and EV/EBITDA multiples of 10x and 6x, respectively and offers a 3% yield. We view this as a very modest valuation and continue to see substantial share price upside potential. House Stock.

M&C Saatchi has reset its proposition under new CEO, Moray MacLennan, outlined at a capital markets day (CMD), with speakers from across the group’s activities and geographies. With eight agency mergers and 14 loss-making entities closed and much-strengthened governance, the group is now well placed to build on its strengths, aligning creative with technology and data. The financial upheaval has not affected client retention or restrained new business performance, which has been strong. The five-year plan sets out targets for 6% revenue CAGR to FY25, with an increase in the operating margin to 18%, three times the current level. Year-end net cash was £33m.

In the last fortnight, we have surrendered some of the notable progress made over the last three months. That said, the optimism displayed by markets, driven by progress with vaccines and their rollout, persists. The recent direction of markets has been set by volatility in US markets, driven by specific retail market developments. Domestically, we have seen a broadly upbeat procession of results and trading updates/outlooks have, generally, been at least in line. The share price reactions have been commensurately positive. In addition to the results news flow, we have continued to see examples of M&A activity across a range of sectors. We have also seen a pick-up in IPO activity. Regarding the outlook, we have the Bank of England MPC Minutes on Thursday and Q4 2020 GDP numbers on 12 February. Most notably, we have the UK Budget on 3 March when the Chancellor will set out the next phase of the plan to tackle the virus and protect jobs. We will also have the latest forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility. That said, if signs of a greater than anticipated economic recovery are feasible in Q2 & Q3 and, potentially, only limited lockdowns are likely later in the year, grounds for greater optimism for UK small caps could lead to further outperformance in 2021, especially if M&A activity continues, in a world awash with cash.

In its seasonally weakest quarter, Tremor has announced that it is expecting Q1 21 organic net revenue growth of +71-87% to net revenue of $55-60m ($63-68m as reported), and adjusted EBITDA of $25-28m (Q1 20 $0.5m). The Programmatic division is driving this remarkably strong performance with expected Q1 21 organic net revenue growth of +84-95%, as the strong H2 20 momentum has continued into Q1, and Tremor’s platform is capitalising on the structural growth in digital video and Connected TV advertising. After upgrading our forecasts 4 times since September 2020, we conservatively upgrade our FY21 and FY22 EBITDA +21% and +23% to $82m and $100m, and if Tremor’s Q1 21 momentum continues through FY21, our forecasts are likely to see substantial upside. We upgrade our FY21 and FY22 adjusted EPS by 23% and 28%, and upgrade our FY21 and FY22 net cash to $145m (previously $136m) and $211m (previously $188m). As Tremor prepares for its proposed US listing in Q2 21, we do not expect that its current valuation will be sustainable due to market or external interest. As we highlight from p5 of our 10 March 2021 report, Tremor is trading at a major discount to its US peers despite experiencing the same 2020 trends, expecting Q1 21 organic revenue growth of +71-87% that is substantially ahead of all of its US peers at +13-41%, and having conservative FY21-22 forecasts. Tremor’s current 12-month forward EV/EBITDA of 12x with NTM EBITDA growth of +34%, compares to its US peers PubMatic, Magnite, and The Trade Desk, on 12-month forward EV/EBITDA of 41x, 67x, and 88x, with NTM EBITDA growth of +4%, +33%, and +51%, and Tremor’s 12-month forward EFCF yield of 5% compares to its US peers on less than 1%. We upgrade our target price to 1,200p based on 22x FY22 EBITDA, and look forward to further trading updates.

The MISSION Group’s FY20 results were in line with the pre-close update, with sequential improvements in quarterly trading from Q220. The breadth of the agency portfolio gave resilience to the group’s trading performance results, as healthcare and technology exposure provided a positive counter to the weaknesses in property and events-oriented businesses. The MISSION comes into FY21 with a reduced cost base and an established collaborative culture. This is helping feed business between group agencies and give access to specialist services without replication. Year-end net bank debt of £1.2m (excluding leases) and a new £20m RCF give plenty of scope to grasp expansion opportunities.
Mission Group’s interim results detail a resilient performance against a very challenging backdrop and provide a clear reminder of its deep digital skill set and culture of innovation, the strength of its portfolio of blue-chip clients and its positive underlying momentum. There is also a cautiously optimistic assessment of the outlook for H2 and beyond, supporting our confidence in its strong medium-term growth prospects. We continue to regard the group’s stock as materially undervalued and see substantial share price upside potential. House Stock.
