The UK market showed a continued recovery in the first quarter albeit the indices are still well short of their all-time peaks, unlike many of their international peers. The FTSE 100 has risen by 1,186 points (21.4%) since the end of October and the FTSE 250 by 4,304 points (25.0%). The comparable performance since the start of the year is less spectacular- the FTSE 100 has risen by 253 points (3.9%) and the FTSE 250 has risen by 1,070 points (5.0%). The factors behind the sustained rally are familiar. The belief that the roll-out of the vaccine and some relaxation of lockdown limitations will lead to a significant economic recovery, compared to the collapse seen in the first half of 2020, due to lockdowns. Indeed, the recent economic picture is becoming more optimistic than previous expectations. According to the ONS, the economy grew a little more than initially estimated in Q4 last year. This means GDP for 2020 as a whole contracted by 9.8%, revised up marginally but still the worst contraction on record. Markets, in general, have focused upon the potential scope and extent of the recovery. The sectors and stocks that have outperformed have been seen as ‘recovery’ plays with a rotation from stocks seen as ‘lockdown’ winners into those set to benefit from the ‘unlocking of society’ and/or exposed to the consumer. We expect 2021 will continue to be a “stock-picker’s” market. The sharp increase in the household savings ratio in Q4 highlights the scope for a recovery driven by expenditure. As further lockdown limitations are lifted, evidence of this growth will help to underpin the more optimistic outlook for Q2 and beyond.

REACT Group plc (REACT), the leading specialist cleaning, decontamination and hygiene company, has provided the market with an update on trading for the six-months to end March 2021. This shows very encouraging progress in revenue, gross profit, gross profit margin and adjusted EBITDA against the comparative period, all of which was generated organically. The acquisition of Fidelis was concluded at the period end and will therefore be consolidated in REACT’s second half period. As noted in our earlier research (29 March 2021) the acquisition of Fidelis is expected to be complementary and immediately earnings enhancing, raising our adjusted FY2021 EPS forecast by 41% from 0.10p to 0.14p and by c.70% on an annualised run rate basis. Our forecasts remain unchanged and we believe that there is further substantial upside in the share price.

The Q1 21 performance was along expected lines with retail revenue down 99%, as most of retail outlets were shut for the entire quarter. This was partially offset by the broad-based online momentum (+32%cc). In addition, the BetMGM momentum continued to accelerate in the US, translating into higher market share. We do not expect any significant change to our estimates, as we expect the online gains to more than offset the retail losses. However, retail closures remain a downside risk.

Today’s news includes several exciting milestones. 1) The formal sale process/offer period has concluded, with Education sold for £30m. 2) This successfully pivots STU to focus entirely on its fast growing online Studio business, which has traded strongly in Q4. 3) FY adj PBT is c10% better than pre-restricted forecasts as a result, and 4) strong FCF/sale proceeds catapult it into a small net cash position (excl. securitisation). Along with a pension scheme surplus, this is transformational and paves the way for re-rating vs current multiples (8x P/E).

Ahead of planned reopening on 17 May, the message of Ten Entertainment Group (TEG) is clear. With tenpin bowling as the driver, it has the product (a successful value proposition enhanced during the pandemic) and the resources (strong balance sheet with over £18m liquidity headroom) to capitalise in both the short and longer term. Despite 2020 sales down 57% because of COVID-19 restrictions investment continued apace (c 70% of 2019 levels), from digital to key refurbishments and ‘next-generation’ expansion. Consequent scope for lucrative marginal revenue growth on total 1.3m sq ft is a formidable draw, as is the outlook for reopening and beyond. Pent-up demand seems a given in view of TEG’s buoyancy after the spring 2020 lockdown (August/September l-f-l sales 77% of prior year despite 50% lane capacity, addressed now by lane dividers), while pandemic fallout should facilitate expansion on advantageous terms.

In the last fortnight, we have surrendered some of the notable progress made over the last three months. That said, the optimism displayed by markets, driven by progress with vaccines and their rollout, persists. The recent direction of markets has been set by volatility in US markets, driven by specific retail market developments. Domestically, we have seen a broadly upbeat procession of results and trading updates/outlooks have, generally, been at least in line. The share price reactions have been commensurately positive. In addition to the results news flow, we have continued to see examples of M&A activity across a range of sectors. We have also seen a pick-up in IPO activity. Regarding the outlook, we have the Bank of England MPC Minutes on Thursday and Q4 2020 GDP numbers on 12 February. Most notably, we have the UK Budget on 3 March when the Chancellor will set out the next phase of the plan to tackle the virus and protect jobs. We will also have the latest forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility. That said, if signs of a greater than anticipated economic recovery are feasible in Q2 & Q3 and, potentially, only limited lockdowns are likely later in the year, grounds for greater optimism for UK small caps could lead to further outperformance in 2021, especially if M&A activity continues, in a world awash with cash.

Various Eateries owns, develops and operates restaurant sites in the UK, having been established with arguably the strongest ever team assembled in the hospitality sector to take advantage of the disruption caused by the pandemic. This morning, the group has released in-line full year results to 27 September 2020, having listed on AIM two days prior to year-end. Importantly, the overall site performance when allowed to open has been positive. Since the beginning of the new financial year, Coppa Club in Cobham has been added to the estate and management is seeing a large number of sites and businesses becoming available. Although disruption will continue to affect its eleven sites in the coming weeks, restrictions in place continue structurally to increase the size of the opportunity ahead - more sites are becoming available at even lower rents, competition for customers is being further reduced and a larger and more distressed pool of potential acquisition opportunities will be presented, all firmly reinforcing the Various Eateries investment case.
