Emily Telford, Project Manager of BSF Enterprise’s (BSFA) Lab Grown Leather, tells us about the science behind its product and why it has the potential to be even better than the real thing.
Among the many applications of BSF Enterprise’s advanced tissue engineering technology is the ability to grow artificial leather. Almost indistinguishable from traditionally produced leather, the product has huge advantages over existing leather substitutes and the potential to hugely disrupt the $82bn global leather market.
As well as obvious ethical and environmental benefits, when produced at scale Lab Grown Leather has the potential to reduce the cost of leather production by streamlining the production process, in particular the removal of the need to strip out waste material from animal hides.
Lab Grown Leather has already been working to test its product with customers in the luxury fashion industry, renowned for its rigorous quality standards. These trials are creating strong demand for an industry keen to enhance its ethical credentials, paving the way for the commercial rollout of production facilities.
