Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust VP, Senior Product Specialist Sri Chandran presented at the Proactive One2One investor forum to discuss the trust's approach to investing in global emerging markets.
Chandran explained that emerging markets are forecast to outpace developed markets in terms of economic growth, driven by demographic trends and consumption tailwinds, for instance. He explained that “emerging markets are significantly undervalued compared to developed markets,” also citing a decade of prior outperformance to 2010 and current valuations near historic lows compared to developed markets.
He described how the asset class has evolved, shifting from traditional commodity sectors to innovative technology companies central to the global economy.
Chandran detailed Templeton’s selective approach, managing a best ideas portfolio of stocks. He highlighted TEMIT’s bottom-up stock-picking strategy that focuses on businesses capable of sustaining earnings power and trading at a discount. The portfolio typically holds around 80 high-conviction stocks, including TSMC and SK Hynix in semiconductors, and ICICI Bank in India, for instance. Chandran also addressed TEMIT’s differentiators including: a deep local research footprint with over 70 professionals, an experienced portfolio management team, and historic outperformance of the index.
