Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF, FRA:I8A) CEO Graeme Purdy talked with Proactive about how the company’s solid-state battery technology is addressing key challenges facing electric vehicles and next-generation medical devices. In the interview, Purdy explains how Ilika is developing two complementary product lines - Stereax miniature batteries and Goliath large-format batteries - to target very different markets with strong growth potential.
Purdy outlined the fundamental problems that solid-state batteries aim to solve, particularly in electric vehicles. According to Purdy, consumers want “less expensive vehicles, the vehicle to go further on a single charge, and the ability to charge quickly.” Ilika’s technology is designed to address these priorities through improved safety, lighter battery packs and faster charging performance.
The company’s Stereax batteries focus on miniature applications such as active implantable medical devices. These include smart orthopaedics, neurostimulation technologies, implanted sensors and ophthalmic devices that require small but powerful energy sources. Meanwhile, Goliath batteries are designed for electric vehicles, where safety benefits and lightweight construction can improve performance and efficiency.
Purdy also discusses recent milestones, including the shipment of Stereax M300 prototypes, which signal that the company has reached a minimum viable product stage and is beginning early customer engagement. In the EV market, Ilika has progressed to 10Ah prototype cells, bringing the technology closer to integration into automotive battery modules and packs.
Manufacturing progress is another important development, with Ilika achieving a 93% yield on its automated pilot line, a key benchmark for demonstrating scalability ahead of potential licensing deals.
