Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust (LSE:ORIT) co-fund manager David Bird joined Stephen Gunnion in the Proactive studio with more on the trust’s focus on building and operating renewable energy infrastructure across Europe, highlighting both wind and solar as key technologies.
Bird explained that ORIT aims to offer investors an attractive income stream with long-term capital growth by not only acquiring operational assets but also developing new ones. "We're not just owning operational wind and solar farms, but also developing and building new ones," he said.
ORIT’s investment strategy centres around diversification — both in terms of geography and technology — to mitigate risk and smooth cash flows. Bird noted that combining wind and solar assets can reduce volatility as their output patterns often offset each other. He also cited investments across multiple jurisdictions as a safeguard against local regulatory shifts or adverse weather in one region.
Discussing the advantages of ORIT’s affiliation with Octopus Energy Generation, Bird pointed to deep technical expertise and strong market insight as major differentiators. "We have engineers, people from turbine manufacturers who really understand the assets," he stated, adding that the group’s proximity to regulators gives it an informational edge.
On the macro environment, Bird underlined the continuing relevance of renewable energy given ongoing concerns over inflation, energy security and decarbonization. He said the sector benefits from fixed-price revenues and inflation-linked contracts, making it resilient and income-generating.
Bird also touched on the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 (CP30) initiative, describing it as an acceleration of pre-existing ambition and a supportive backdrop for future projects. Concluding, he said: “There's an opportunity to get in now, be part of something that has huge potential in the future and get in what we think's an attractive valuation.”
