Last year we expected global policy changes in clean energy to dominate and this has certainly been the case. Most changes have been negative for clean energy companies and derived from the Republican administration in the US. However, there has also been a shift in focus from sustainability to energy security. This is true at both a national level and a corporate level. Security is also being further pressured by the rise in electricity demand from data centres. We highlighted data centre demand last year but the growing theme in 2026 will be meeting that demand securely. BYOP (Bring your own power) is a growing theme here and more widely, with distributed energy resources (DER) solutions growing in importance. Big areas for 2026 are storage both long and short, PV, and other distributed energy, including biogas and geothermal.
