FTSE 100 fell in early dealing wiping out all of last week’s gains after a bumpy night for Asian markets after Friday’s US sell-off.
London’s blue-chip index was down 34 at 8,214 with US-focused stocks the worst performers led by online educator Pearson.
Bookmaker Entain is the best of the risers. The owner of Ladbrokes, Coral and Foxy Bingo said its financial outlook for 2024 was unchanged despite the warning from rival Flutter last week about big losses from American Football matches.
Group earnings this year would be towards the top end of its guidance range, said the Entain statement, sending its share price up 8%.
BP and Shell were also risers as Brent crude hit a four-month high on talk of new US sanctions on Russia.
Recruiter PageGroup confirmed things are tough at present with employers cutting back, which knocked its third-quarter revenues by 17%. Conversion from interview to offer is the biggest challenge said the group. Shares were down 4% in early trades.
